PERMACULTURE 101

Many people may already be familiar with the term “Permaculture”. If you’re not, this article will give you a good idea of what permaculture is and what practicing it can accomplish toward the goal of healthy communities, healthy humans, and a healthy Planet.

This definition is from growforagecookferment.com: “Permaculture is a holistic design system for creating sustainable human settlement and food production systems. It is a movement concerned with sustainable, environmentally sound land use and the building of stable communities through the harmonious interrelationship of humans, plants, animals and the Earth.”

The word permaculture originally comes from the phrase permanent agriculture--once soil is prepared and planting has been done the resulting growth systems, when properly managed and cared for, can be perpetually maintained.

However, as the above definition from growforagecookferment.com indicates, permaculture takes gardening to a new level, then goes far beyond. If taken as a design system for living, it can well be one of the much needed ways to mitigate the effects of climate change on human lives in a sustainable and very doable manner.

The GLOBE Committee is just starting to discover the awesome capabilities of permaculture practice, and as we learn more we’ll be passing our knowledge on to our fellow LUUF members.

There is an amazing amount of information out there through courses, books, videos, and the internet. Here are some online sources to get you started:
